In this article, the author doesn’t have any opinion or emotion towards the topic. She is simply explaining a current event and providing facts for the news. For example, the author uses direct quotes and data to further explain the information about the ship. The overall tone the author has is candid and direct. The purpose of this article was to inform the reader on the China ships, what they are for, and what they have been doing. The tone direct is evident throughout because the author uses no opinionated words, and just uses facts, for example, “Ships will use the 225 square nautical miles to test technology including autonomous steering and obstacle avoidance.” This quote shows no bias, it is simply a statement. The author appeals to logos most evidently because all she does is talk about the China ship, for example, “The 22-foot vessel, developed by the Shenzhen Huazhong University of Science and Technology, performed patrols and moved in formation with other unmanned vessels.” She uses logos to explain what the ships do for the people who don’t know or understand.
